The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available on the Nintendo Switch, and the Switch just received its own version of the Nintendo 64 controller. Nintendo released this N64 controller for use with the Nintendo 64 games available to play through the Switch Online Expansion Pack, but the controller can be used with other Switch games as well. Skyrim is among the titles that can technically be played with a Nintendo 64 controller on Switch.

This was shown off in a recent Reddit video uploaded by user ChessAddictWinter, showing how exactly Skyrim plays with a Nintendo 64 controller. As one might imagine, it doesn’t go well. It seems that the Nintendo 64 C-buttons are used to control the camera, much like old school GoldenEye 007, and beyond that, some of the button mapping choices don’t make a whole lot of sense. For example, pressing B brings up the menu that players use to look at their map and skills, as opposed to being an action button of some kind like it would be in most Nintendo 64 titles.

It’s possible that playing Skyrim with a Nintendo 64 controller could be made more manageable if players had the option to remap the buttons, but that functionality is not available at the time of this writing. It’s also not possible to remap the buttons for other Nintendo Switch controllers when playing Nintendo 64 games, which has caused issues for those who haven’t been able to get their hands on one of these N64 Switch controllers.

The Nintendo 64 Switch controllers sold out almost immediately, despite the general reaction to the service being rather poor. It seems many fans are upset about how much the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack costs, and others still aren’t happy with the Nintendo 64 game performance. Nintendo is working on fixes, though it hasn’t revealed when fans can expect those improvements to be implemented.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions launching November 11.
