Instead of PES 2019, PS Plus subscribers would instead receive a Detroit: Become Human edition that includes Heavy Rain. And apparently, the change was ordered directly by Sony.

PS Plus subscribers who were looking forward to PES 2019 as one of the free PlayStation 4 games for July quickly went to the source for answers. Since PES 2019 is developed and published by Konami, it made sense to ask the company. Konami, surprisingly, offered a public comment to Eurogamer about the change saying, “The decision was made by SIE and so please make an inquiry to SIE.”

The question then went to Sony as to why Detroit was added instead of PES 2019, despite the fact an announcement had been made. It stands to reason that something pressing had forced the change, but Sony provided little clarity by saying, “This was a decision we decided to make as a company, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Naturally, Sony’s last-minute change and the lack of clarification has led to some speculation on the issue. Sony’s close relationship with Electronic Arts, developer of PES competitor FIFA, has drawn some concern. Of course, the decision may not have had anything to do with PES 2019 at all. Detroit: Become Human may simply have had a limited contract window that Sony took advantage of.

In the end, both Detroit: Become Human and PES 2019 are well-received games that will be welcome additions to any PlayStation Plus subscriber’s library. And soccer fans can still hope that PES 2019’s inclusion on the service has merely been delayed, rather than canceled entirely.

PES 2019 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
