A new video shared by UploadVR shows a prototype PlayStation VR controller that would enable finger tracking. The video was put together by Sony researchers experimenting with motion controls and finger-tracking specifically. In the video, researchers display accurate finger tracking, to a degree, while using Sony’s bulky prototype controller.

Finger tracking is notably absent from the PlayStation Move controller’s functionality, but is increasingly important for PC VR applications. The Valve Index controllers have basic finger tracking technology and the Oculus Touch controller can track some but not all finger positions.
The video raises questions about Sony’s plans for future PlayStation virtual reality products. Rumors have gone around that Sony is planning a PlayStation VR 2 headset, which would undoubtedly require a set of PlayStation VR 2 controllers. These finger-tracking controllers could be exactly what’s necessary to make the PS VR 2 parallel to the latest PC VR technology. Sony will hopefully continue to share more information on its PlayStation VR efforts throughout 2020.
