Players will take the role of Michael J. Goreng, a well-known epidemiologist and zoologist. He is trapped in his house with his wife and daughter, and must survive against paranormal activity and an unknown threat. Players will be able to unlock different endings, but replayability for this Playstation VR exclusive will be even greater because of a mechanic that will make the game a little different each time.

Quasar Interactive started with a solid escape-the-room foundation for Do Not Open and gave it a roguelike twist: no two playthroughs will be exactly alike, and there is no save. All the riddles and spooky events players would normally encounter in a game like Dead by Daylight are instead generated randomly, meaning the replayability for Do Not Open is going to be its main selling feature.

Virtual reality is especially conducive to the horror genre. Ideally in any horror experience, be it VR, the cinema, or a haunted house, total immersion is key for the best scare. In that vein, PlayStation VR has been the platform of choice to experiment with new horror game mechanics. The dynamically generated puzzle/event mechanic is a game-changer that is sure to up the intensity for adrenaline-addicted players.

Do Not Open will have some stiff competition this year, as the PS5 is expecting Resident Evil 8 and a rumored Silent Hill reboot. That shouldn’t matter much in the long run, though, because adrenaline junkies tend to be open to new frightening experiences. Newbies might want to start with Amnesia: The Dark Descent and other horror games before they take on this title.

The release date for Do Not Open will be announced soon as a PlayStation VR exclusive.
