Built from the ground up for VR, Wanderer is a puzzle-based adventure game that the developers aim to establish and further the next-generation of games of this genre. Oddboy and M-Theory utilize “realistic and innovative physics-based interactions” to bring their game’s puzzles and environments to life.

Wanderer sets the players in the shoes of a character named Asher Neumann, a time traveler tasked with responsibility of rewriting the past. Set in the year 2061, Earth lies in ruins, and nature is devouring all of what’s left of humanity’s influence on the world. Players will see themselves traveling back in time to explore ages such as the moon landing, the psychedelic 60s, and even Tikal in 1525. Players will not only travel through the past, they will also travel into the post-apocalyptic future to solve puzzles and crack codes. According to the developers, Wanderer combines aspects found in escape room puzzles and action sequences to deliver an experience that sees players bring objects and events from the past together in unique and unexpected ways.

In this PSVR journey, players will get to meet and interact with some history’s notable icons such as Nikola Tesla. They will also find themselves working with a Mayan priest to fend off an invasion, performing at a concert in Bethel, New York in front of massive hordes of people, and even decoding messages in the middle of a war. However, while Asher will establish trusted alliances with those he meets, he will also have enemies that are looking to stop him from altering history and saving human civilization.

Wanderer is a PlayStation exclusive that can be played on either the PS4 or PS5 with a standard PlayStation VR headset, but it may not be playable on the upcoming PSVR2. Sony has yet to comment on the backwards compatibility of the PSVR2, so whether players can potentially play Wanderer on it is up in the air. Given that the shortage of PS5 consoles also continues, players looking to buy this title will want to purchase the PS4 version in spite of the limitations that the aging hardware will inevitably cause.

While Wanderer might not be backward compatible on the PSVR2, its highly-detailed worlds and technical puzzles make Wanderer an ambitious title for those who love solving puzzles. Even players who don’t enjoy puzzle-solving will want to keep an eye on this game because of its stunning visuals and clever brain-teasers. Wanderer will also receive updates, so players can potentially look forward to new content in the future.

Wanderer is now available on the PSVR.
