In Hocus Pocus 2, a well-mannered shopkeeper, Gilbert, wants to resurrect the Sanderson Sisters because he thought they got a bad rap. Is that the case or is there more at foot here? That’s the basic outline but what about plot details that weren’t fully explained or that didn’t make sense? There will be spoilers ahead for both films.
7 What Happened To Mother Witch?
The Sanderson Sisters’ mother is brought up in the original movie but not dived into. She makes a brief appearance in the sequel as Mother Witch. How she dies, if she dies, is not explored either though. This could open the doors for another sequel to explore more backstories concerning their family lineage. After all, their biological parents are not seen either but in that case, it could be assumed they are all orphans. There could be more evil witches out there too. Also, is there anyone else in the present that looks like their Salem relatives as much as Mayor Traske?
6 The Sanderson Sisters’ Musical Talents
Fans of the first movie love to point out the Sanderson Sisters performing “I Put a Spell on You” as one of the film’s highlights. Hocus Pocus 2 brings back that campy musical idea for two performances. One is “The Witches Are Back” which is a remixed version of “The Bitch is Back” by Elton John and the other is a remixed version of “One Way or Another” by Blondie.

All three of these songs bring to light an important question. How did these witches from the 1600s know these pop songs by heart? It’s one of those questions that should be left alone because it’s just fun to be in a musical and Disney does know their way around them.
5 Revisionist History
Gilbert is a new character in this sequel that explains he saw the Sanderson Sisters die as a child. He was awestruck by their witchcraft and thought they got a bum deal but why is never explored. He should think they are evil based on the children eating alone. Either way, he liked them enough to work hard so that he could get enough money to buy their house to try and resurrect them. Did Gilbert ever try to resurrect them before Becca? Nearly three decades is a long time to wait to do that if the candle was ready by then.
4 The Book Can Sweat And Cry?
The Book was said to be made of human skin in the first movie which was admittedly a horrifying tale, to begin with. The eye is also a scary aspect of the Book’s design. It’s never shown to either sweat or cry in the original movie unlike in Hocus Pocus 2. This could be a new aspect that they wanted to introduce in the sequel but it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Crying could be okay since there is an eye there and it is sentient. Sweating is another thing though since the skin is dead and not part of the Book’s organs or anything like that.
3 Why Leave The Sanderson Sisters?
Becca and her friends know the Sanderson Sisters are witches and also crafty. They don’t know how potentially powerful their magic is even when they trap them in salt in Cassie’s garage. So, when they do that, why did they leave them unattended? They ran outside to the bus to “keep an eye on them” but their angle is terrible. No one could have watched them from their position carefully. This of course leads to the witches escaping again thanks to Mary’s vacuum pals. This makes Mary one of the craftiest witches in the movie despite her goofier demeanor.
2 Billy Butcherson Didn’t Decay
The end of the first movie is bittersweet. The Sanderson Sisters are defeated thanks to the service of the sun and hollowed ground. The curse is lifted on Thackery Binx which kills his cat form and allows him to go to the afterlife, as a ghost, to follow his sister.

If Binx’s curse was lifted then why didn’t Billy Butcherson get to die peacefully too? He dies in Hocus Pocus 2 which is good, but not disappearing or even decaying in nearly three decades from the first movie is odd.
1 Hocus Pocus 3?
Is there going to be a third movie? That could be at the top of the minds of fans after seeing the stinger scene at the end. Cobweb, Gilbert’s black cat, jumps onto a shelf to show off he has another Black Candle waiting. Surely Gilbert would not be silly enough to try and resurrect them again. However, there is the chance that some long-lost witch will try to resurrect the Sanderson Sisters again at some point. If this movie proves successful enough, Disney might give the green light to the project sooner rather than later. Their online service was seemingly made to resurrect dead franchises.
