February 6 is, perhaps now unofficially, Mewtwo’s known date of birth. In the original Pokemon games, diaries found within the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island break down the origin of Mewtwo. In those diaries, one notable page reads “Mew gave birth” and so the legend of Mewtwo began. This diary page can also be found in the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen remakes. That’s why Pokemon fans are celebrating today as Mewtwo’s birthday.

As noted, the birthday of Mewtwo is considered somewhat unofficial by the modern Pokemon canon. That’s due to a couple of reasons. First, the lore in the original Pokemon Red and Blue is somewhat unspecific. While it’s true that the Pokemon Mansion diaries say that Mew gave birth to Mewtwo, those diaries also state that Mewtwo was created “after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiment.” As such, any single date may not be appropriate to consider as Mewtwo’s birthday, even by the original games’ lore.

Additionally, this birthday has since been retconned in later iterations of Pokemon. In Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee, modern remakes of Pokemon Yellow, the diary describing Mewtwo’s birth has been altered. The diary now reads “We obtained a new Pokemon from Mew,” adding a layer of complexity to the situation.

Then, to make matters even more complex, the Pokemon anime has gone down an entirely different path. In the first official Pokemon animated movie, Mewtwo’s origin is changed to a clone of Mew by Team Rocket rather than genetic alteration.

Regardless of what the official Pokemon canon is surrounding Mewtwo’s original and birth, fans aren’t going to let that stop them from celebrating. To fans, February 6 is Mewtwo’s birthday and nothing is going to change that. The official Pokemon Twitter account may decide not to post anything, however.
